NRI marriages, as they are commonly known, occur when an Indian lady from India marries an Indian man who lives in another country (thus, NRI - non-resident Indian), either as a citizen of that nation (in which case he would legally be a "NRI") or as a citizen of India (when he would legally be a PIO – person of Indian origin).
